THE ART NOUVEAU, HECTOR GUIMARD, IN THE 16th DISTRICT OF PARIS

What will you discover on this guided tours ?

The Art Nouveau movement is that of curves and arabesques. Freely inspired by nature, also favouring the theme of women. It is a pure product of the Belle Époque (1890-1914). Art Nouveau offers a true aesthetic universe ideally placed within everyone’s reach. In Germany, Art Nouveau was called Jugendstil. In Spain Gaudi became its greatest representative. While in England it was embodied in the Arts & Crafts movement. Sometimes called Modern Style, It was criticised and called Art Nouille (Noodle : meaning here = stupid) .

In France, it is mainly Hector Guimard who embodies it, through the entrances of the metro (subway) of which he is the architect. He justifies it in this way : “Symmetry is by no means a condition of art, as many people like to believe; it is a habit of the eyes, nothing else. During this visit, we will discover in the chic 16th arrondissement of Paris some of Guimard’s creations, you may be surprised to see them and discover all the secrets they contain.
